Regret was born in 1912, a beautiful chestnut foal with a bold, white blaze on her face. Her sire was Broomstick and her Dam was Jersey Lightning. As a three year old she ran in the Kentucky Derby in 1915 and was in the lead from start to finish. She won with a time of 2:05(2/5), and was the first filly to win the Kentucky Derby. She won easily. The start was fast and she was in the lead at once, rated in front until the last eighth, where she drew away, to win easing up, while the second and third place horses were driving hard. The Jockey was Joe Notter and her owner is Harry Payne Whitney.
Regret's first defeat came as a four year old when she finished last in the Saratoga Handicap.Later that season she won an allowance race. It was the first time she had started in anything other than a stakes.
At five, Regret made only four starts and won three. She was then retired to stud with 9 wins and a second in 11 starts. She produced 11 foals but none as good as she. One became only a minor stakes winner.
Regret died in 1934 and was buried at the Whitney farm.
