Douglas Adams - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (June 1997)  Join Douglas Adams's hapless hero Arthur Dent as he travels the galaxy with his intrepid pal Ford Prefect, getting into horrible messes and generally wreaking hilarious havoc. Dent is grabbed from Earth moments before a cosmic construction team obliterates the planet to build a freeway. You'll never read funnier science fiction; Adams is a master of intelligent satire, barbed wit, and comedic dialogue.

Or is it all some kind of plan designed to trap Ethan, Ashley, Elena and Jack?.

Stefano Ardito, A. B. Milan (Translator) - Mont Blanc : Discovery and Conquest of the Giant of the Alps (October 1997)  Located in the northwest corner of the Alps where the borders of France, Italy and Switzerland meet, Mont Blanc is the highest, wildest and most impressive mountain in Europe, and arguably the most beautiful. Dave Barry - Dave Barry Turns 50 (October 1998) www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0609603272/stellarbooksan dt "Many bad things happen when you turn 50. You can't see; you can't hear; you can read the entire Oxford English Dictionary in the time it takes you to go to the bathroom; and you keep meeting people your own age who look like Grandpa Walton (and those are the women)." Yep, Dave Barry is getting old, and the King of Humor may soon become the King Lear of Humor, but fear not, because Dave is not going quietly. Dave Barry Turns 50 is Barry at his best, mainly because it succeeds in being more than simply a collection of his newspaper columns. He examines the development of the baby boomer, from youth in the '50s ("an age so innocent that there could be a TV show featuring a main character called 'The Beaver'") to maturity in the '70s ("We ... basked in the reflected glory of Woodward and Bernstein: we were inspired by them; we kept a sharp eye out for any hint of corruption in the way our local school board purchased clarinets for the marching band"), before providing a self-help guide for those entering their second half century.   (1)

Gavin De Becker - The Gift of Fear : Survival Signals That Protect Us from Violence (May 1998) www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0440226198/stellarbooksan dt Each hour, 75 women are raped in the United States, and every few seconds, a woman is beaten. Each day, 400 Americans suffer shooting injuries, and another 1,100 face criminals armed with guns. Author Gavin de Becker says victims of violent behavior usually feel a sense of fear before any threat or violence takes place. They may distrust the fear, or it may impel them to some action that saves their lives. A leading expert on predicting violent behavior, de Becker believes we can all learn to recognize these signals of the "universal code of violence," and use them as tools to help us survive. The book teaches how to identify the warning signals of a potential attacker and recommends strategies for dealing with the problem before it becomes life threatening. The case studies are gripping and suspenseful, and include tactics for dealing with similar situations.  (1)

John Buchanan - The Road to Guilford Courthouse : The American Revolution in the Carolinas (February 1997) www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/047116402X/stellarbooksan dt The British attempt to recapture the Carolinas (1780-1781) is one of the most fascinating untold stories of the American Revolution. It was a campaign of attrition fought by "back country" rebels who invented new tactics to suit the terrain of their New World. The Road to Guilford Courthouse vividly recounts this little-known yet pivotal episode, a bloody campaign that led to what could only be called a hollow British victory.  (1)

Robert A. Catalano (Editor) - When Autism Strikes : Families Cope With Childhood Disintegrative Disorder (May 1998) www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/030645789X/stellarbooksan dt To lose a child is tragic; to lose a child who still lives is beyond comprehension. Yet this is the experience of the mothers and fathers who tell their very personal stories in this important book. Their children, born healthy and happy, lost their minds to a mysterious disorder with no known cause or cure: Childhood Disintegrative Disorder (CDD). Also called late-onset autism, this malady differs from typical autism in that it afflicts children after one to three years of apparently normal development, and long-term deterioration may lead to even poorer behavioral and developmental functioning. How do families respond to such ever-present loss? In When Autism Strikes, the parents of eight such children from around the world present their own stories, in their own words. They describe their first suspicions, their struggles to find a cause, and the means by which they cope, day to day.

Robert K. Cooper, Leslie L. Cooper (Contributor) - Low-Fat Living : Turn Off the Fat-Makers Turn on the Fat-Burners for Longevity Energy, Weight Loss , Freedom from Disease (June 1998) www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/157954021X/stellarbooksan dt Many health and fitness books offer once-over-lightly health evaluations, giving general information about getting your lifestyle in order and toning up your body a bit. Because all of these books work from the same universe of information--"Aerobic exercise gives you a stronger heart!" and "Resistance training builds muscle tone!"--the only real difference is in how clearly the authors explain the basics and how appealing they make the information. Low-Fat Living gets high marks on both counts. If you're in moderately good shape and try to watch your diet, you're not going to learn anything new here. But if you've let your health slide and you're starting to see the detrimental effects of doing so, this book is as good as any to help you get on the right track.  (1)

Jared Diamond - Guns, Germs, and Steel : The Fates of Human Societies (April 1999) www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0393317552/stellarbooksan dt Life isn't fair--here's why: Since 1500, Europeans have, for better and worse, called the tune that the World has danced to. In Guns, Germs, and Steel, Jared Diamond explains the reasons why things worked out that way. It is an elemental question, and Diamond is not nearly the first to ask it. However, he performs a singular service by relying on scientific fact rather than specious theories of European genetic superiority. Diamond, a professor of physiology at UCLA, suggests that the geography of Eurasia was best suited to farming, the domestication of animals, and the free flow of information. The more populous cultures that developed as a result had more complex forms of government and communication--and increased resistance to disease. Finally, fragmented Europe harnessed the power of competitive innovation in ways that China did not. (For example, the Europeans used the Chinese invention of gunpowder to create guns and subjugate the New World.) Diamond's book is complex and a bit overwhelming. But the thesis he methodically puts forth--examining the "positive feedback loop" of farming, then domestication, then population density, then innovation, and on and on--makes sense. Written without favor, Guns, Germs, and Steel is good global history.

Jean Donaldson - Culture Clash (January 1997 )  www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1888047054/stellarbooksan dt *The Culture Clash is special. Jean's tremendous affection for dogs shines through at all times, as does her keen insight into the dog's mind. Relentlessly she champions the dog's point of view, always showing concern for their education and well being. Without a doubt, Jean's book is the hottest doggy item on the market. Greg Egan - Diaspora : A Novel (February 1998) www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0061052817/stellarbooksan dt One thousand years from now, most of humankind expresses itself as conscious software, although sentient robots and a remnant of Homo sapiens called fleshers are also present. Unknown forces threaten the existence of the fleshers, and Yatima, the central consciousness in Egan's novel, seeks answers. Yatima can assume "ancestral form" but has no gender. Egan even invents personal pronouns--ve and the possessive ver--to refer to Yatima. Yatima was born in an elaborately concentric expression of DNA, and the universe is flying apart in a similar, elaborately concentric fashion. Yatima explores worlds and myriad dimensions in an ever-expanding search for the Transmuters, an ancient, mostly incorporeal race whose search for knowledge explains the diaspora. Yatima at last discovers the Transmuters, dispersed in a high dimension much like the Milky Way, and thus returns the novel to its beginning, suggesting that what is always was. The general reader may find this tough going, but Egan's speculations, brilliantly extrapolated from current science, are a physicist's delight.

Johnson's method won't work for everyone, but the worst that can happen if you try it is that you'll be out the price of the book, which still makes the experience cheaper than a lot of weight-loss programs.

Wayne Johnston - The Colony of Unrequited Dreams (June 1999) www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0385495420/stellarbooksan dt ... the fictional biography of Joe Smallwood, one of Newfoundland's most controversial political figures, and focuses on his early years and arduous rise to power: union organizer, newspaperman, socialist turned liberal, and Newfoundland's first premier after confederation with Canada in 1949. Writing from Smallwood's perspective, Johnston voices a deep longing on the part of the scrappy and mostly hapless schemer to do something historically significant, "commensurate with the greatness of the land itself." Intensely powerful passages of amazing sensitivity paint another side of Smallwood, that of a caring champion of poor people in a land of unrelenting hardship.

Laurie Beth Jones - Jesus, Ceo : Using Ancient Wisdom for Visionary Leadership [ABRIDGED] (February 1995) www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0671520326/stellarbooksan dt After years in business, Jones was struck by the notion that Jesus' leadership approach ran counter to most of today's management styles. In Jesus, CEO, she explains that by harnessing the three strengths behind Jesus' leadership techniques (the strengths of self-mastery, action, and relationships), we can become the empowered leaders that the next millenium will require.

Following the example of Jesus -- a "CEO" who took a disorganizied "staff" of twelve and built a thriving "enterprise" -- Jesus, CEO details a simple, profound, fresh, and often humor-filled approach to motivating and managing others. (1)

Ronna Kabatznick The Zen of Eating : Ancient Answers to Modern Weight Problems (March 1998)  www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0399523820/stellarbooksan dt When it comes to weight loss, the emphasis today is shifting away from fad diets and compulsive workouts toward sane, sensible techniques that incorporate both the mind and the body. This is the first book to apply the 2,500-year-old principles of Zen Buddhism to the modern struggle with the vicious cycle of dieting, losing, and regaining weight. From a Buddhist perspective, overeating is a disorder of desire. This book will teach readers how to find freedom from eating problems and the tyranny of desire that triggers them. Filled with concrete, practical exercises and the wisdom of the ages, The Zen of Eating provides, at last, an alternative to ineffective diet programs, products, and pills.

Paul Krugman - The Accidental Theorist and Other Dispatches from the Dismal Science (April 1999)  www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0393318877/stellarbooksan dt When economics and ideology mix, the results often sound plausible, but in fact can be terribly wrong and lead to ill-conceived and sometimes dangerous economic policy. For several years, Paul Krugman, author of The Accidental Theorist and one of the most celebrated economists of the '90s, has been punching holes in fashionable ideas such as the logic of supply-side economics and the evils of globalization. The Accidental Theorist is a collection of Krugman's best published and unpublished essays that cover everything from the Asian financial crisis to inflation in America.

Krugman's cause is neither left or right; rather it's the pursuit of clear thinking about economics that's unfettered by ideology. He writes, "But we should never be surprised when prominent people say foolish things about economics. The history of economic doctrines teaches us that the influence of an idea may have nothing to do with its quality--that an ideology can attract a devoted following, even come to control the corridors of power, without a shred of logic or evidence in its favor."

David S. Landes - The Wealth and Poverty of Nations: Why Some Are So Rich and Some So Poor (May 1999)  www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0393318885/stellarbooksan dt Professor David S. Landes takes a historic approach to the analysis of the distribution of wealth in this landmark study of world economics. Landes argues that the key to today's disparity between the rich and poor nations of the world stems directly from the industrial revolution, in which some countries made the leap to industrialization and became fabulously rich, while other countries failed to adapt and remained poor. Why some countries were able to industrialize and others weren't has been the subject of much heated debate over the decades; climate, natural resources, and geography have all been put forward as explanations--and are all brushed aside by Landes in favor of his own controversial theory: that the ability to effect an industrial revolution is dependent on certain cultural traits, without which industrialization is impossible to sustain. Landes contrasts the characteristics of successfully industrialized nations--work, thrift, honesty, patience, and tenacity--with those of nonindustrial countries, arguing that until these values are internalized by all nations, the gulf between the rich and poor will continue to grow.

Jack London - Call of the Wild (May 1990)  www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0812504321/stellarbooksan dt Novel by Jack London, published in 1903 and often considered to be his masterpiece. London's version of the classic quest story using a dog as the protagonist has sometimes been erroneously categorized as a children's novel. Buck, who is shipped to the Klondike to be trained as a sled dog, eventually reverts to his primitive, wolflike ancestry. He then undertakes an almost mythical journey, abandoning the safety of his familiar world to encounter danger, adventure, and fantasy. When he is transformed into the legendary "Ghost Dog" of the Klondike, he has become a true hero

In Healing Hypertension, Mann explains how you can tell if hidden emotions are instrumental in your hypertension (they may not be, if your condition is mainly genetic), and if so, how you can get on the path to healing. Some clues that you may be burdened by hidden emotions include emotional trauma that you think is behind you, a habit of not feeling unwanted emotions, a history of emotional isolation, and childhood abuse or severe family dysfunction. Mann also briefly discusses how hidden emotions can affect other medical conditions such as back pain, headaches, and anxiety disorders. He spends most of the book helping you see that hidden emotions may be affecting your hypertension.

Dead? In a coma? As Armand reflects on Lestat's condition, he is drawn by David Talbot to tell the story of his own life. The narrative abruptly rushes back to 15th-century Constantinople, and the Armand of the present recounts the fragmented memories of his childhood abduction from Kiev. Eventually, he is sold to a Venetian artist (and vampire), Marius. Rice revels in descriptions of the sensual relationship between the young and still-mortal Armand and his vampiric mentor. But when Armand is finally transformed, the tone of the book dramatically shifts. Raw and sexually explicit scenes are displaced by Armand's introspective quest for a union of his Russian Orthodox childhood, his hedonistic life with Marius, and his newly acquired immortality. (1)

David Schnarch - Passionate Marriage : Love, Sex, and Intimacy in Emotionally Committed Relationships (May 1998)  www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0805058265/stellarbooksan dt People joke that the start of a couple's marriage means the end of their sex life. David Schnarch, a sex therapist praised by Pepper Schwartz, uses epiphany-laden conversations taken directly from his own marriage and the married couples he sees in practice to help readers defy the myth that marriages are necessarily passionless, and instead prove that the longer a couple has been together, the higher the fireworks can fly. It's especially aimed at older couples who, Schnarch says, are self-actualized and therefore better able to handle intimacy than younger partners. "People have difficulty with intimacy because they're supposed to," he says, and goes on in this inspiring book to combine elements of marriage therapy and sex therapy to bring plenty of practical, fresh ideas to the crowd of mostly vapid relationship books. (Note that despite its title, it's for any emotionally committed couple, not just married folks.)

Erika Schwartz, MD, Carol Colman - Natural Energy : From Tired to Terrific in 10 Days (January 1999)  www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0399144617/stellarbooksan dt Dr. Erika Schwartz is a mitochondria maniac. She's focused on this cellular organelle because it's so ubiquitous (they can be found in nearly every cell, excepting those in the lens of the eye and red blood cells). Mitochondria are responsible for cellular metabolism, and some researchers suspect them to be at the crux of the aging process. As the theory goes, mitochondria weaken with age, and the body's energy stores gradually plummet. Death is the eventual outcome.

Schwartz thinks that two supplements--Coenzyme Q10 (Co-Q10 for short) and L-carnitine (not D-carnitine, which may be toxic), taken several times daily with meals, may short-circuit the mitochondrian breakdown.

Benson, Jarreau, Elliot, Caldwell - KKSF 103.7 Smooth Jazz...Volume 9 (October 1998)  www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000DFNS/stellarbooksa ndt

Sarah Brightman, Andrew Lloyd Webber - The Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection (June 1999) www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000I0XW/stellarbooksa ndt Sarah Brightman's career was launched by her success in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera, so it's no surprise to hear the soprano paying homage to the composer on this disc. Really a Brightman best-of, the album includes the Phantom theme (a duet with Michael Crawford), the light-opera fare of "Chanson D'enfance" from Aspects of Love, "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina" from Evita, and numerous other Lloyd Webber classics. Throughout, Brightman's diminutive voice lends a fragility to these musical theater tunes that you'll either love or despise. On Evita's "Another Suitcase, Another Hall" and Cats' "Memory," she literally chirps through the vocal lines. No matter. The growing legion of Brightman fans wouldn't have it any other way.

Gilbert & Sullivan: Iolanthe (August 1989)  www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000041Q1/stellarbooksan dt Iolanthe has one of the funniest lines in all of Gilbert and Sullivan. As the Peers (as in the House of Lords) enter, they sing: "Bow! Bow! Ye lower middle classes; Bow! Bow! Ye tradesmen bow ye masses; Blow the Trumpets! Bang the brasses! Tan Taran Tarah Chin Boom!" OK, so you had to have been there; but trust me, it's a riot. Anyway, this "fairy"-story parody on the undine theme, about a fairy who loves a mortal, is a typically frothy confection of biting social satire and innocent sentiment. The performance by the D'Oyly Carte company is about as close to the original production as we're likely to get.

Ella Jenkins - Counting Games And Rhythms For The Little Ones (October 1997)  www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000001DNQ/stellarbooksa ndt Originally released by renowned Folkways recording artist Ella Jenkins in 1965, Jenkins appears on Counting Games and Rhythms for the Little Ones with children from Lake Meadows Nursery School. Most appropriate for preschoolers and elementary-school children, this short collection of tunes neither panders to nor reaches frustratingly beyond the abilities of its intended audience. Jenkins comes across as a warm and respectful leader gently guiding her small charges through a set of verbal tumbling while reinforcing the importance of order and of both individual and group dynamics. There are a number of old favorites here, including "Two Little Black Birds" and "One, Two, Buckle My Shoe," which makes the collection as enjoyable for parents as it is for kids.

Jewel - Spirit (November 1998) www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000F1CY/stellarbooksa ndt With her dulcet voice and lulling refrains, Jewel makes the social and political ills of the world go down easy. But in doing so, she unintentionally confounds the problem, since her honeyed background-music folk makes issues of life and death appear more benign and less worrisome than they are.

Mamas & Papas - Greatest Hits (March 1998)  www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000062XS/stellarbooksan dt The Mamas and the Papas had a sound that helped define a portion of the 1960s. Their breezy folk classics had a bit of San Francisco psychedelia woven in, and despite the sweet harmonies, there was also a noticeably dark feel to some of their more popular work. "California Dreamin'" and "Monday, Monday" both utilized enough minors to give them a spooky edge. Greatest Hits is an essential part of any audiophile's collection, especially if they don't have the original recordings that spawned the hits. "Dedicated to the One I Love" is almost ironic for its tenderness, considering the turmoil that rumbled through the band's interrelationships. While John and Michelle Phillips and Denny Doherty were all responsible for the success of the Mamas and the Papas, listening to this collection reveals that the late great Mama Cass was not only the heart but the soul of the band. Greatest Hits closes with her "Dream a Little Dream of Me," and serves as a touching tribute to Cass Elliot's talent.

Sarah McLachlan - Mirrorball (June 1995)  www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000IOSU/stellarbooksa ndt Live, a haunting ballad such as "Possession" becomes a fevered, aggressive bit of psychedelia. "Hold On" reveals new depths when performed behind the beat with morphing time signatures and driving piano. McLachlan's warmly expressive voice is still at the epicenter of her performances. She roams through these 14 songs with agile ease, riding the rails between singing for dramatic arena effect--huskily growling, airily trilling--and knowing what to play down with her sensually controlled crooning (witness such gems as Fumbling's title song and "Good Enough"). Overall, McLachlan's vocals match the heavily percussive intensity of her band and the build of her backing vocalists, producing a more spacious sound than the precise pitch rendered on her studio recordings.

Shawn Mullins - Soul's Core (September 1998) Shawn Mullins is a '90s acoustic troubadour whose lyrics, at their worst, read like overly precious journal entries ("The road is my home / And my spirit is wild"), making him seem sometimes like Jewel with a Y chromosome. (According to his song "Twin Rock, Oregon," Mullins has lived out of his van, too.) But some of the 13 songs that comprise Soul's Core have bite, especially the restless "Ballad of Billy Jo McKay" and the gritty "Gulf of Mexico." Mullins is at his best when he plays to his strengths, which include an affinity for working-class characters and an eye for detail. Best of all is his sweet Georgia drawl, which pours honey over the aching "Soul Child" and the memorable chorus of his breakthrough hit, "Lullabye." Mullins produced the album, his major-label debut, and even though it's his eighth title (he sold its predecessors out of that storied van), he is an artist whose skills are still on the rise.

Bonnie Raitt - Takin' My Time (April 1998)  www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000002KEZ/stellarbooksa ndt Featuring an eclectic mix of pop, rock, blues, and soul, the material ranges from Eric Kaz's powerful ballad "Cry Like a Rainstorm" and Jackson Browne's "I Thought I Was a Child" to the snappy acoustic blues of Mississippi Fred McDowell's "Write Me a Few of Your Lines/Kokomo Blues" and the charming calypso "Wah She Go Do." Raitt is backed on the album by members of Little Feat as well as Taj Mahal, legendary New Orleans drummer Earl Palmer, and Rolling Stones sax man Ernie Watts, giving the album a loose, grooving vibe. Her versions of Mose Allison's smoldering "Everybody's Cryin' Mercy" and Randy Newman's sly "Guilty" are real standouts.

John Stewart - Bombs Away Dream Babies  www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000002Z84/stellarbooksan dt “Superb effort by John Stewart with the backing of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. An interesting blend of music traits that meshes together very nicely into a solid album.”  (originally 1979)

Shania Twain - Come On Over (November 1997) www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000001EW3/stellarbooksa ndt Whether Twain is a modern-day Dolly Parton or a country music Spice Girl is a matter of perspective. But with her third album, she accentuates the sing-along choruses and simple dance rhythms while downplaying the country elements. As a pop move, it works wonderfully for her, earning Twain a valued spot on MTV, VH-1, and pop radio. The emphasis is on fun rather than depth, of course. But no one can accuse her of being stingy: She and her Svengali-like producer/husband, slick-rock king Robert "Mutt" Lange (Def Leppard, Bryan Adams, AC/DC), load down the album with 16 songs, all of them quite radio-friendly.

Breaker Morant (1980) www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1572521775/stellarbooksan dt Factual account of an incident that occurred during the Boer War (1899-1902) between the predominately Dutch in South Africa and the British. Three Australian soldiers, devastated by the death of a friend in battle, strike out against one of the enemy. Because of this act, they become prime suspects when a German missionary mysteriously vanishes. The trio goes on trial -- represented by a lawyer who has only had 24 hours to put together their defense. Winner of 10 Australian Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director & Best Actor. This memorable film also won the Cannes Festival Award.

Sherlock Holmes - The Crucifer of Blood (1991) www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/630228757X/stellarbooksan dt An impenetrable mystery leading back to the heart of India plagues the legendary detective in this capable and original production.

Sherlock Holmes and the Incident at Victoria Falls (1991) www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/6302278872/stellarbooksan dt Just before retiring to Sussex to raise bees, Sherlock Holmes is persuaded by King Edward to bring a valuable diamond back from South Africa. This leads to an encounter with Teddy Roosevelt, lots of chugging about in steam trains, and a great deal of intrigue. Lee is fine as an aging Holmes, but Macnee's a bit too comic as Watson. Cut down from a four-hour miniseries, accounting for some story abruptness--and Jenny Seagrove's name in the credits, though she does not appear on screen.
