** Floatable only during high river levels.... Experienced Floaters Only.
At "Good Floating" levels, canoeists can average approximately 2 miles per hour.
Buffalo River is a Class I and II River. It is generally manageable with little canoeing
experience.
River readings or "levels" are indications of the river's condition for recreation. The figures are unique for each recording station; the rating is the important thing to consider.
The rating at each location may be different. For example, the river at Steel Creek may be at flood stage and Closed, while, at the same time, the launch at Buffalo Point may be classified as Good Floating.
This is due to the rising and falling of river levels depending upon local rainfall. High water levels along the river will move downstream, raising levels and changing ratings. These level changes may take several hours to go from one station to the next.
Listed below are the rating levels for Buffalo River:
The river is dry in places. Your trip would be more of a hike than a float.
The water is slow and many rocks are exposed. Along many stretches of the river, you will have to drag your canoe. Plan to do a lot of paddling through pools. Your trip may take longer than anticipated.
The water will carry you approximately 2 miles per hour. You should be able to stay within the main river channel, float over most rocks and be underneath the branches of most overhanging trees.
The water is moving more swiftly and you may find yourself in a compromising situation more quickly. Experience is necessary in order to respond to the quick pace. For that reason, all floaters must possess good canoeing skills, be familiar with rescue procedures and have floated that section of the river before.
The water is extremely high and fast, flowing outside the normal banks
of the river and carrying objects directly through willow stands. River conditions
are hazardous even for highly skilled canoeists.
