 Public Hearing Set

by Sue Park

The Clarksville Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a public hearing on the master street plan at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22, at the city hall conference room. This action was taken during the Commission's regular monthly meeting Tuesday, Jan. 25.

A Jan. 25 memo from James von Tungeln, urban development consultant, outlined seven capital projects to be considered as part of the master street plan.

The projects are an extension of Palmer Road from Poplar Street to Highway 21, an extension of Clark Road from Crawford Street eastward, improvements to the Wal-Mart Super Center entrance at Highway 103 and Market Street, reconstruction of Crawford Street, reconstruction and extension of Country Club Road, extension of Blackburn Street southward, and the widening of the Rogers Street (Highway 103) overpass of I-40.

Chair Mike Hughes stated a master street plan will be available for the public to view at city hall. Hughes stated a final drawing of the master street plan will be completed after the public hearing.

Mayor Billy Helms and Clarksville-Johnson County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Vicki Lyons advised the Commission the proposed extension of Palmer Road was submitted to the Arkansas Highway Transportation Department (AHD) recently. This was done to have the project considered for the AHD's list of projects because of $1 million being available in the near future.

Commissioner Connie Hamilton asked if state funds can be utilized to extend Market Street eastward to Big Danger Road. Hughes stated those funds will have to be city funds from the one-cent sales tax monies.

In other business, Hughes was reelected chair and Don Pennington was reelected secretary with Herb Rideout being elected vice chair.

A public hearing will be held Feb. 22 during the Commission's regular monthly meeting on rezoning 1313 South Crawford from an A-1 zone (agriculture) to a R-2 zone (multi-family residential).
