Mayor Marvin L. Vinson, 70, of Clarksville died Saturday, June 16, 2001,
at the University of Arkansas Medical Center in Little Rock.
He was born March 10, 1931, to J. H. and Martha Vinson at London where
he was raised. He joined the Air Force upon graduation from London High
School in 1949, and retired as a master sergeant in 1969, with over 20
years of service.
Mayor Vinson was a member of Second Baptist Church in Clarksville. He
was elected mayor in 1983 and served in numerous positions within the state,
southern and national municipal leagues. These positions included president
of the Arkansas Municipal League in 1993, founder and past president of
Johnson County Economic Development Corporation, chairman of the Southern
Municipal Conference in 1999, and past president of West Central Planning
and Development District in 1989. He served on the Arkansas Municipal League
Investment Committee, Southern Municipal League Conference Board, and as
chairman of the public safety commission. He was a member of the board
of trustees for the University of the Ozarks from 1987-92, recipient of
the Chamber of Commerce Pillar of Progress award in 1997, and Mayor-of-the-Year
of the Arkansas Police Chiefs' Association in 1996.
Survivors include his widow, Emma Vinson; two sons and daughters-in-law,
Tommy L. and Delores Vinson of Lamar and Lee R. and Debbie Vinson of Harker
Heights, Texas; two sisters, Violet Hatfield and Wanda Blackman, both of
Clarksville; one brother, Pete Vinson of Clarksville; five grandchildren;
and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral was at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 19, at Raymond Munger Memorial
Chapel on the campus of the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville with
Rev. Joe Craft and Rev. Sam Brown officiating.
Burial was in Price Cemetery at London under the direction of Hardwicke
Funeral Home.
Full military rites were by the Little Rock Air Force Base Honor Guard.
Active pallbearers were Francis Pitts, Billy Willis, Vernon Howard,
William Yousy, Mike Jacobs, and Charles Morris.
Honorary pallbearers were employees of the city of Clarksville, Floyd
Pledger, Herb Stalcup, Virgil Knight, Bill Coats, Bennie Warren, Clifford
Metzker, Wes Kendrick, Clarence Cowell, Dane Parker, and Perry Johnson.

Betty Jean Johnson, 70, of Danville, mother of Mrs. John (Brenda) Payne
of Clarksville, died Sunday, June 17, 2001, at AMI St. Mary's Regional
Medical Center in Russellville.
A native of Sacramento, Calif., she was a daughter of the late Dewey
Roberdes and Maggie Quattlebaum Roberdes Mitchell, a retired certified
nursing assistant for Mitchell's Nursing Home in Danville, and was preceded
in death by one granddaughter, Cassidy Johnson.
Survivors include her husband, James C. (Jim) Johnson; one son and daughter-in-law,
Jerry C. and Kathleene Johnson of Houston, Texas; one other daughter, Mrs.
John (Gloria) McDonald of Fresno, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Jamie Payne
and Joey Payne, both of Clarksville, Jacob Coleman of Kingwood, Texas,
A. J. McDonald of Fresno, Calif., Sylvia Blowers and Stephanie Blowers,
both of Arizona, and Brandi Johnson of Okolona; and one great-granddaughter,
Maegan Payne of Clarksville.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 20, at Cornwell Funeral Home
Chapel in Danville with Rev. Earl Stapleton and Rev. David Hawkins officiating.
Burial will be in Earl Ladd Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Randy Parson, James Parson, Jamie Payne, Joe Monroe, Bill Bob Wood, and Chad Vestal.
Lucille Allene Rinke, 84, of Clarksville died Saturday, June 16, 2001,
at Johnson Regional Medical Center.
She was a retired nurse, Methodist, daughter of the late Seth Allen
Sr. and Jewell Bell Allen, and widow of Leonard Francis Rinke.
Survivors are one daughter, Kay Rinke of Russellville; one son, Richard
Hose of Carrollton, Texas; one stepdaughter, Cecelia Looper; 12 grandchildren,
Daphne Brewer, Valerie Dean-Meyer, Kevin Dean, Michele McCurrie, Richard
Hose, Rebecca Reynolds, Wendy Romaine, Jonathon Hose, Jason Hose, Gary
Looper, Terry Looper, and Chris Looper; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services and burial were at 2 p.m. Monday, June 18, at the Kendall Cemetery with Rev. Lowell Eaton officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Roller-Cox Funeral Home.
Louise M. Rinke, 88, of Altus died Sunday, June 17, 2001, at Ozark Nursing
Home.
A native of Altus, she was a daughter of the late John and Elizabeth
Hoing Risse, widow of Herman Rinke and member of St. Mary's Catholic Church,
St. Mary's Mother's Society and Catholic Women's Union.
She is survived by one daughter, Hermina Koerdt of Altus; two sons,
Gerald Rinke of Altus and Leon Rinke of West Helena; and two grandchildren,
Sonita Gail Pledger and Mikala A. Hudson.
Rosary was at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 19, at Shaffer Funeral Home in Ozark.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 20, at St. Mary's Catholic Church
with Father Hilary Filiatreau officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's
Cemetery at Altus.
Pallbearers will be Fred Holloway, Jim Rofkahr, Dewayne Freeman, James Dahlem, Brian Rinke, and Julius Rofkahr.
Linda Sue Cowell, 49, of Clarksville died Thursday, June 14, 2001, at
Johnson Regional Medical Center.
A native of West Memphis, she was a daughter of the late Clyde Shatwell,
member of Crossroads Assembly of God Church, employee of Sara Lee Hosiery,
and was preceded in death by one sister, Imalee Madewell; and one brother,
Ray Shatwell.
Survivors include her husband, Michael Cowell; one daughter, Amanda
Brown of Clarksville; one son, Matthew Brown of Clarksville; two stepsons,
Jeremy Cowell of Clarksville and Kerry Cowell of Scranton; mother, Ora
Shatwell of Lamar; two sisters, Emma Jean White of Lamar and Marie Lindsey
of Clarksville; six brothers, Dean Shatwell, Freddie Shatwell, Delman Shatwell
and Kenneth Shatwell, all of Clarksville, Redell Shatwell of Knoxville,
and Leroy Shatwell of Independence, Mo.; and two grandchildren, Quentin
Addis and Mikatelynn Brown, both of Clarksville.
Funeral was at 10 a.m. Monday, June 18, at Hardwicke Funeral Chapel
with Rev. Gerald Morris officiating. Burial was in Holman Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Tim Brown, Troy Brown, Brian Tipton, Bo Miller,
Daryl Vaughn, and Roger Shatwell.
Honorary pallbearers were Johnny Hall and Robert King.
Laura Beth Horne Dawson, 40, of Fayetteville died Thursday, June 14,
2001, at her home.
She was a former resident of Johnson County, daughter of the late Irma
Horne, 1978 graduate of Harrison High School, graduate of the University
of Arkansas, retired administrative assistant for Charter Vista Health
Center, and a member of Christian Life Cathedral. She was a member and
past president of Butterfield Elementary School PTA, member of Christian
Women's Fellowship, honorary chair of the 1998 Relay For Life, and member
of Delta Gamma sorority.
Survivors include her husband, Dudley E. Dawson; one daughter, Lindsey
of the home; one son, Brooks of the home; father, Roy Horne of Fayetteville;
two sisters, Leslie Callison of Tulsa, Okla., and Cara Dollins of Mountain
Home; two brothers, Brian Horne of Fayetteville and Bennett Horne of Harrison;
four nieces; and two nephews.
A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 19, at Christian
Life Cathedral in Fayetteville. The body was cremated with cremation by
Nelson's Funeral Home and arrangements under the direction of Hardwicke
Funeral Home of Clarksville.

Michael Wayne Roach, 38, of Eudora, Kan., died Tuesday, June 12, 2001,
at Kansas University Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan.
A native of Fort Smith, he was a building contractor and was preceded
in death by his father, James Roach.
Survivors include his mother, Flossie Roach of Clarksville; two sisters,
Debra Roach of Gardner, Kan., and Cindy Trout of Clarksville; and two brothers,
Robert Roach of Lamar and Stephen Roach of Eudora, Kan.
Graveside services and burial were at 10 a.m. Friday, June 15, at Nichols Chapel Cemetery in Altus with Rev. Lance King officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Hardwicke Funeral Home.
