      Joseph, Son of Jacob
Just two (2) of them in the Bible!
The Genesis-Joseph (GenJoseph) is NOT in the pedigree of Jesus -- instead it was Judah, 4th son of Leah, who was given the honor of hosting the House of Judah, Ps132:11, and continuing the father-to-son pedigree leading to Jesus.

However, the MattJoseph WAS in the pedigree of Jesus -- he was the FATHER of Mary, and she was his only daughter. Luke3 is the genealogy of Mary's husband IAW Numb36:6.

The name Jacob means 'supplanted', Gen27:36, (to take the place of..), and the only two Jacobs in the Bible are the one with the 12 sons in Genesis, and the stranger in Mt 1:16 who just precedes Joseph and Mary.

Noah#10 was "perfect in his generations", Gen6:9, and so apparently was Abram#20 and Boaz#30, but Ruth4:18 SKIPS three names before listing the 3rd group of ten generations leading to David#33.

Obviously a precept for the three groups of fourteen in Matthew, wouldn't you say?

      COUNTING THE JOSEPH'S
Can you think of more than three (3) Joseph's in the Bible?
The Genesis-Joseph is known for wearing the coat of many colors and was the 11th son of Jacob. The name 'Joseph' means "the Lord will add a son", which applied to Benjamin back then, but may have had even more meaning to Mary's husband..(you think?) The account of how the 11th son rose to be VP of Egypt is told in a dozen chapters in the Book of Genesis, so we know more about him than any of the other Joseph's. Gen30:24

      2. The carpenter husband of the Virgin Mary had other sons too. Matt 13:55, Lk3:23

      3. Joseph#3 was not so well known, but he was "a rich man of Arimathea" (the city named Ramah today) who supplied his new sepulchre for the body of Jesus. Matt27:57

(Young's Analytical Concordance lists twelve Joseph's including the 'Tribe' of Joseph; and nine Simon's; )

4 'ordinary' Josephs are named in the OT:

#4.   Numb13:7 (Joseph, father of Igal),
      #5.   1Chr25:2 (son of Asaph),
      #6.   Ezra10:42 (son of Bani),
#7.   Neh 12:14 (of Shebaniah) bringing the Joseph count to seven.

In the NT, Luke3 lists four:
      #8 - the son of Mattathias (Luke3:25)
      #9 - son of Juda (3:26)
      #10 - son of Jonan (Luke3:30)
       #~ ...son of Heli (Luke3:23).

This last Joseph, of Heli, is reckoned to be the same as Mary's husband,
so our count now is 3 plus 4 plus 3 = 10 Josephs.

#11 - Acts1:23 And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. (This Joseph was not selected as replacement for Judas Iscariot--rather, it was Matthias who received that honor).

Matt 1:16 And Jacob begat Joseph the husband(Gr: aner) of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ. This word "aner" refers more to a male than a husband and is translated other than 'husband' more than 150 times in the KJV. The Aramaic Peshitta uses the word 'gavra' (mighty man), rather than 'husband'.

Matt 1:1 begins: The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

David had 20 sons and Abraham had more sons after Ishmael and Isaac, but having Mary's husband included in this Generation of Jesus seems to belie the fact of His Father being God Almighty. So I prefer to believe this was actually referring to Mary's father -- a secret Joseph, if you will, that speaks to us now in these latter days.

The Joseph in Matthews Genealogy is a "son of Jacob" just as that early Joseph was the 11th son of Jacob. Scholars for centuries have considered him to be Mary's husband, but he might be a hidden or secret Joseph (father of the virgin Mary) -- the first in a long line to have no sons, but only the one daughter. A contrast to Zelophehad, Numb26:33, who had five daughters but no sons.

Two sons but no daughters for the 11th son of Genesis--contrast with one daughter and no sons for the 11th Joseph of the entire Bible.. The Joseph in Egypt had two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, who were incorporated into the Twelve Tribes and led to the two kingdoms-- compare to the single daughter bringing a Single Saviour to the World! and if that reminds anyone of Ruth4:15, so much the better.

So have we learned anything from counting the Josephs? Is it too confusing, or are we any the wiser for it?

Do you understand 'Jacob to Joseph to Mary to Jesus', any differently ?

Joseph means 'the Lord will add a son'

      COUNTING THE SIMON'S
Simon is a name given to a variety of individuals in the Bible
The nine (9) named "Simon" in the scriptures are an assortment of characters.
Simon surnamed Peter was one of the 12 apostles. Mk3:16
The Cyrenian who carried the cross . Mk15:21
The father of Judas Iscariot. John 13:26
A sorcerer in Samaria. Acts 8:9
      A Pharisee. Lk7:40
      A half-brother of Jesus. Matt 13:55
A leper in the town of Bethany. Mk 14:3
Simon Zelotes, another of "The Twelve". Acts 1:13
The tanner at Joppa where Peter had the vision. Acts 9:43

"It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter". Prov25:2

Psalm 18:33 "He maketh my feet like hinds' feet, and setteth me upon my high places". -- Hindsight is what we do when we compare the ending of the Bible to what "was written" previously.. Amen?
