Day Into Night

A new day dawns, light triumphs once again
Another night's obscurity lost in brilliant clarity
The shadows melt away and birds with song rejoice
They sing because they have no other choice
But demonstrate God's purpose in each sweet voice
I, too, was once convinced I knew my way
I once had purpose, goals I must pursue
Mileposts to measure, achievements to treasure
With an easy stride to overcome them all, with pride
Deadlines met, chores done, enjoying rest, my due
But now I wander through each empty day
With faltering steps, I walk where once I ran
I rest without having toiled to earn the right
And the mileposts are days that lead toward
An endless shore beside a sea of night.
