We Can't Go Back

We can't go back to where we were
That place in time and space is gone
We cannot stop the sands of time
And so we must move on
Whatever words we might have said
Forever now are left behind
And all the debts and sad regrets
Are only shadows of the mind
The tears that fell are wiped away
And only memories make us sad
But for an hour, they've lost that power
To make us long for what we had
It isn't that our love was less
Than love should ever try to be
Our love was sweet and quite replete
With passion, as all love should be
But it was not "forever" love
The love that poets feign exists
It lately changed and rearranged
As life, with all its turns and twists
Will change us into someone new
A person older, somewhat wise
So love amends to make us friends
And friendship is a sweet surprise
