A Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jewels Verne, is about and eccentric old scientist named Professor Hardwigg that finds directions to the center of the earth in a old book. He sets out along with his nephew Henry, and a Icelandic guide named Hans to Iceland, where he enters a dormant volcano, that supposedly leads to the center of the earth. After many weeks of traveling, they come to a huge sea in the middle of the earth. Eventually they get out, by getting caught in a lava stream of a volcano that is about to erupt. When they come out, they find themselves thousands of miles away from their starting point.

The thing I thought was most interesting about this book was the vivid scenery it described. When the three travelers first come to the sea, Verne takes up about an entire page describing the sights and sound that the travelers saw. "A vast, limitless expanse, the end of a lake if not a ocean, spread before us, until it was lost in the distance......The shore, which was very much indented, consisted of a soft golden sand, mixed with small shells......."

Another thing that made this book interesting, was that it was being told by Henry, after the adventure had already happened. Because of this, you know immediately that Henry, Hans, and Hardwigg, will survive the journey and be able to tell the story. Also since Henry was telling this, when he is asleep, or unconscious, we do not know what has happened.
