A 17-year old pled guilty Monday to charges of forgery and uttering in the Pope County Circuit Court. Russell Roberts gave the youth a three-year suspended sentence.

Donald Mullican, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Mullican of Atkins, has received his discharge from the air force, returning home last week.
The Atkins Red Devils will open the 1953 football season at 8 p.m. Friday when they take on the Charleston Tigers at Lemley field.

As the Atkins High School Red Devils enter the second week of practice, several new men are developing into promising prospects. Several players have reported since the opening practice and more are expected with the opening of school next Monday.
Plans for the Atkins Livestock and Poultry Show to be held Friday and Saturday, Sept. 30, Oct. 1 are being rapidly pushed to completion.
The Atkins school will open for the regular fall term on Monday, September 12. The new vocational agricultural building will be ready for occupancy. This department is well equipped and every facility toward making this department standard is being supplied. Also a thoroughly equipped commercial department is being added. This department will be in charge of Mrs. Henry Dauley, a graduate of the business department of Arkansas State Teachers College.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Stroud announce the birth of a son, John Coleman, Thursday, Aug. 25.
The Atkins Public schools will begin the regular fall and winter term Monday, September 10, at 8:45 a.m. Parents and patrons are cordially invited to attend the morning exercises.
Little Miss Vandell, seven year old daughter of Ralph Darr, is making a vitaphone picture which will be produced by Warner Brothers and is named “On Trail.”
J.T. Burlingame, representing the Arkansas Natural Gas Corporation, is in Atkins this week buying land for right of way for a 12” gas pipe line which will be laid from the Clarksville Gas wells to Little Rock. The pipe line will run south of town near the Corporation limits. With the completion of this line, there is no reason why the City Administration and the company should not get together on acceptance rates and allow the citizens of Atkins to take advantage of the use of natural gas.
A crew of hands are doing some good work on the new mountain road this week. The road is being made ready for the traffic and widened for two way traffic.
Tucker Biggers, Albert Reed and Miss Lula Nugent have been employed by J.E. Darr to work in his store this fall and winter.
J. M. Barker is attending the board of state charitable institution this week.
An automobile struck town Monday and for awhile was the center of attraction.
Mr. and Mrs. A.T. Embry have the sympathy of friends in the loss of their five months old baby Monday morning. It had been sick for quite a while.
Mrs. J.W. Lyons was severly burned Monday night by a night lamp exploding in her hand and setting fire to her clothing. A piece struck her on the head cutting the temporal artery. Her husband extinguished her clothing and Dr. Eddy was called to see her. She is now out of danger.
Thursday morning, J.M. Reynolds, who lived about two miles South of Atkins, was killed by lightening about nine o’clock.
