The Atkins Red Devils used a strong first half performance to defeat the Subiaco Trojans 19-0 Friday night at Lemley Field in Atkins in the opening game of the year for both teams.
Lucas Duvall kicked off for the Red Devils to open the season. Subiaco’s John Cauldwell lost 7 yards on the return to the SHS 17 yd. line. Wingback Ian Myers gained 3 yds. and fullback Dustin Coreley got 3 yards on 2nd down. On 3rd and 4,Coreley was held to no gain on a hit by Red Devil Josh Newby. Sean Wright’s 21 yard punt rolled dead on the SHS 44.
Tailback Chuck McCoy ran for 6 yards on 1st down. Wingback Lucas Duvall broke loose for 20 yards and a 1st down on the SHS 18. McCoy raced for 11 yards and a 1st down and goal on the SHS 7. Fullback Daniel Hartley got 2 yards and Quarterback Brandon Horn passed incomplete on 2nd down. On 3rd and goal, McCoy raced into the end zone for the first Red Devil touchdown of the year. Lucas Duvall’s PAT was good and Atkins led 7-0 with 7:49 left in the 1st quarter. The 44 yard drive took 6 plays.
Duvall’s kickoff was returned by Coreley to the SHS 33. Coreley ran for 2 yards before Myers broke for 11 yards and a Trojan 1st down on the SHS 46. Three plays netted only 8 yards. Wright’s 32 yard punt rolled dead on the AHS 14.
McCoy ran for 2 yards on 1st down before Horn’s 2nd down pass fell incomplete. Horn was sacked for an 8 yard loss on 3rd. down. Jonathan Cathey’s 55 yard punt rolled dead on the SHS 43.
Quarterback Taz Johnson scrambled for 16 yards on 3rd down to get a 1st down on the AHS 45yard line. Two running plays netted 11 yards and a 1st down on the AHS 34 as the 1st quarter came to an end. On 3rd and 7, Johnson passed incomplete and on 4th down, Coreley was dropped for a 2 yard loss by Cathey. The Red Devils took over on downs on the AHS 33.
McCoy raced for 9 yards on 1st down before Horn’s pass fell incomplete to set up a 3rd and 1. Hartlely bulled for 5 yards and a 1st down on the AHS 47. Duvall was held to 1 yard but McCoy broke free for 13 yards and a 1st down at the SHS 40. McCoy was injured on the play and did not return to the game. Cathey ran for 9 yards on his first carry as a Red Devil. On 2nd and 1, Duvall found a hole and went 31 yards to the end zone . The PAT was no good and the Red Devils led 13-0 with 8:08 left in the 2nd quarter. The 67 yard drive took only 7 plays.
Brandon Dodd’s kickoff was fielded on the SHS 24 and was not returned after the Trojan returner slipped down. Johnson passed to Koch for 15 yards and a 1st down on the SHS 36. Coreley ran for 7 yards but Myers was held to 1 yard on 2nd down. On 3rd and 2, Coreley was stopped for no gain. Johnson was stopped for no gain on 4th and 1 and the Red Devils took over on downs at the SHS 45.
Fullback Charles Terry raced for 17 yards and a 1st down. Horn’s pass fell incomplete on 1st down before a Cathey run netted 3 yards. On 3rd and 7, Cathey raced for 13 yards and a 1st down on the SHS 12. Two plays lost 1 yard. On 3rd and 11, Duvall broke free and ran 13 yards for a Red Devil touchdown. The PAT was blocked but Atkins led 19-0 with 1:20 left in the 2nd quarter. The 45 yard drive took 7 plays.
Atkins held Subiaco to 65 yards in total offense in the 1st half and only 5 first downs. Atkins ran for 150 yards but did not complete a pass. The Red Devils had 6 first downs.
Lucas Duvall returned the 2nd half kickoff to the AHS 30. Cathey ran for 13 yards on the opening play of the 2nd half. Horn completed his first pass of the year to Duvall for 9 yards to the SHS 48. Hartley rumbled for 25 yards and a 1st down on the SHS 23. Cathey ran for 3 yards but lost 2 yards on 2nd down. On 3rd and 9,Horn’s pass to Hartley was good for 8 yards but a holding penalty at the end of the play moved the ball back to the SHS 25. Horn’s 3rd down pass to Seth Race was good for 7 yards. On 4th and 4, Duvall was held to 2 yards and the Trojans took over on downs on the SHS 15.
Subiaco was held to 1 yard after 3 plays. Wrights 27 yard punt on 4th down rolled down on the SHS 43.
Cathey ran for 8 yards and Hartley got the 1st down with a 3 yard run. Cathey was held to 2 yards and Duvall was dropped for a 7 yard loss. Duvall fumbled at the end of the play and the Trojans recovered the loose ball on the SHS 37.
The Trojans got 5 yards on two running plays. On 3rd and 5, Johnson was sacked for a 5 yard loss by defensive end Brad Roberts. Wright’s 26 yard punt was returned by Duvall to the AHS 37. Three plays later, Cathey punted back to the Trojans. Cathey’s punt was good for 30 yards to the SHS 27.
Linebacker Charles Terry knocked down Chris Christensen for a 4 yard loss on 1st down. Myers 2 yard run ended the 3rd quarter on the SHS 25.Johnson was held to 2 yards on 3rd and 12. Wright’s 4th down punt was good for 23 yards and rolled dead on the AHS 48.
Hartley ran for 3 yards on 1st down before Cathey broke loose for 16 yards and a 1st down on the SHS 37. Hartley bulled his way for 14 yards and another 1st down. Hartley was held to no gain on 1st down. Cathey ran for 4 yards to set up a 3rd and 6. Horn’s 3rd down pass fell incomplete and his 4th down pass was intercepted on the SHS 3 yard line. The Trojans rreturned the turnover 4 plays later when Johnson’s fumble was recovered by Brandon Hutchins on the SHS 10.
Cathey was knocked down for no gain on 1st down and then lost 9 yards on an errant pitch on 2nd down.On 3rd down from the 19 yard line, Horn’s pass to Brad Roberts was on target but dropped in the end zone. Horn’s 4th down pass fell incomplete and the Trojans took over on downs on the SHS 19.
Three plays netted only 7 yards for the Trojans. Wright’s punt was fielded by Duvall on the SHS 40 and returned for a Red Devil touchdown. A holding penalty brought the ball back to the AHS 49. The Red Devils picked up only 6 yards on 3 running plays and Cathey’s 4th down punt sailed 45 yards into the end zone. Subiaco only had time for 2 plays that gained 0 yards and the Red Devils celebrated a 19-0 victory to begin the 2003 season.
The Red Devils held Subiaco to only 1 first down and 3 total yards in the 2nd half and only 6 first downs and 68 total yards for the game. Subiaco ran 42 times for 47 yards and completed 2of 3 passes for 21 yards.
Atkins rushed the ball 38 times for 224 yards. Chuck McCoy had 6 carries for 46 yards and 1 TD before going out with an ankle injury. Lucas Duvall ran 7 times for 57 yards and 2 TD’s. Daniel Hartley had 7 carries for 52 yards and Jonathan Cathey had 13 carries for 68 yards..
Brandon Horn completed 5 of 14 passes for 35 yards and 1 interception. Hartley,Duvall, Seth Race, and Brad Roberts all had 1 reception each. Atkins had 259 yards in total offense and had 11 first downs.
Atkins will face the Clarksville Panthers Friday night at 7:30 PM at Lemley Field in Atkins.
The Panthers are 0-1 after falling to the Ozark Hillbillies in their season opener.
