An 18-wheeler overturned when entering the Atkins BP parking lot Thursday, Sept. 3 at about 11:20 a.m.
Driver Darrell Cameron of Oklahoma City, Okla., was injured. He was transported by Pope County Ambulance Service to St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center where he was treated and released. He had one male passenger who was reportedly not injured.
The truck, loaded with cooking oil, had made a delivery to Sonic of Atkins earlier in the day, and had returned to deliver one more box. The driver had planned to park at BP and carry the package across the street.
Atkins Police Chief Charles Martin said that the trailer was a total loss and the truck was damaged extensively. The truck was refrigerated and the cargo was picked up by Casey’s Wrecker Service and put into another refrigerated truck. Health Department officials were on site to inspect the cargo. Most of it was salvaged.
Office of Emergency Management officials were also on site to check the amount of oil that leaked. No diesel fuel leaked out.
The 2001 International truck is owned by U.S. Food Service of Oklahoma City, Okla.
