Galla Creek Pups Sept. 2004--This summer I built an acre pen and started some young pups--trapping squirrels and luring squirrels to them. As fall came and squirrel season opened, I turned out a squad to them to run free. I have 6 pups running loose here in my yard...which is just a pine and oak forest! They are Cherokee Circles (10 months old), Patsy Montana and Cork (6 months old), Bonnie, Bugsy, and Nelson (4 months old). Old Rowdy is running loose with them. He loses too much weight when penned and is too old to be stressed.

Cherokee is treeing up a storm, Cork and Patsy, are treeing, too. The three young pups are starting to take off. I sit on the front porch in the morning and evening and listen for them to tree, going to them when I can.

They treed several times Saturday, Sept. 25. I went to them all afternoon. Some of the trees were close to a neighbors house and I would not shoot the squirrel. About dusk, they treed behind my house so I got the gun and Betty got the camera and we started toward them. The squirrel started crossing out; like they always do here in the the woods!

He missed his footing and crashed to the ground. Immediately, 6 pups prounced on him. They all got in on it. I know this excitement did more good than me shooting him. I think the fire is lit in all 6 of them. That is the secret to training pups...getting them excited about the hunt!
