The Guidos of Cuenca, Ecuador

August 7, 1999 Update on the work and the Guidos
We have been in Latin America for 11 years now. The church was a small home group when we got here, and we now have over 400 adults on Sunday mornings. There are 17 home churches functioning at the moment. We have a Compassion International program which ministers to 160 poor children each week. We just graduated our first Kindergarten class, next year we will open 2 more grades. We have 45 children enrolled.
There are ministries for women, youth, college age young people, and for men. There are regular classes for married couples working with Marriage Ministries International. That involves usually 3-4 groups of 7 couples each who get together each week to go through the materials for 13 weeks. The Foundation has a 10 bed clinic now, and we see around 600 patients a month. We have every surgical specialty except obstetrics and cardiovascular surgery. The physical therapy department sees 200 patients a month.

Family-wise, we continue home schooling Joel who is 12 years old, Lisa and Jonathan (he will start this fall) are both in college at Azusa Pacific University.  John functions as the director of the clinic in the mornings and is part of the leadership team in the church, spending his afternoons down there. He is currently mentoring  6 specific home group leaders, and he also has a group of Promise Keepers.
We also host 3-5 teams of medical doctors a year through the Christian Medical and Dental Society, and independently, and any other kind of ministry or building team that would like to come down here. We are also open to small groups of individuals who are interested in coming down here to "get their feet wet", and see what life is like on the mission field.
